Below are some of the possible problems that can occur with the OnNow / ACPI System and ways to fix them.
Timers are idle or the computer is being put in to standby by mistake.
If System Standby, Turn off Monitor, or Turn off hard disks is inaccurate or doesnÆt seem to work at all, this could be because:
An open application is keeping the computer from going in to standby mode.
An open application is accessing the disk periodically, therefore resetting the disk inactivity timer.
The BIOS settings are overriding the Windows timers.
Hard disk spindown timers do not work with SCSI drives.
To fix this, try the following:
Close all applications.
Check the BIOS settings. If they are greater than the Windows timer settings, try making them less or turn them off completely. If it then shuts down at the BIOS set time, contact your hardware vendor for an updated BIOS or turn them off.
The system appears to stop responding after the monitor shuts down or while in standby mode.
Possible causes are:
The system is responding, but the display is not reinitializing itself properly.
The BIOS is causing the system to stop responding.
An application or driver is causing a problem.
Try the following:
If the display is off, press a key or move the mouse and wait a few seconds to try turning it back on. If that doesnÆt work, type the following:
CTRL-ESC
r
a:
ENTER
If it is just the display not reinitializing itself, the system will look for a floppy disk in your A: drive. Look for the activity light on the drive to light up and listen for sounds of activity on the floppy to verify that the system is still active

Included on the Windows 98 CD-ROM is the Power Management Troubleshooter program - pmtshoot.exe. This program helps you find a device driver or application that prevents your system from entering a power down state, or standby mode.
The program monitors your system as it changes itÆs power-state and displays the information when your system is back to its normal power state. This information is grouped by the different phases of the suspend-process so you can locate when the problem is occurring and with what application or device driver.
To install the program run the pmtshoot.exe file on the Windows 98 CD-ROM. After you have been able to fix the problem, you should uninstall the program under the Add/Remove Programs section of the Control Panel.
